I have a new found interest in Ellen von Unwerth after a brief visit to her exhibit at the Staley-Wise Gallery in New York. Her photos, provocative or not, seem to have a very unique energy in them that I really appreciate. I've been looking through a few of her books and Couples, the book from which the photo above was taken, is pretty interesting (for lack of a better word). All of the photos feature two subjects - some old, some young, some human, some not. Some stay true to "classic" Unwerth, while others like the photo "Gypsies", featuring two fully-clothed men, explore different territory. I'd recommend taking a look at the book -- your eyes will thank you.

Side note: I changed my banner. The other one was looking a bit dated, so I opted for a more simple, classic one. Whatcha think?

We often overlook just how important those t-shirts we throw on five minutes before heading out the door truly are. A simple t-shirt has the ability to bring a look from boring to "effortlessly chic" (this term is used far too often, but when you look damn fine and all you're working with is a t-shirt and some jeans, effortless & chic is pretty much the only way to describe it). It's hard to justify spending over $40 on a plain cotton tee, but when you find the perfect one, the one you can't take off because it makes everything look good, I think it's worth it.

A few weeks ago, I bought a sheer black backless tank from Alexander Wang's T line. I think I've worn it about 3-4 times a week since. Agreed, agreed, it's not too hygienic, but I can't help it. I've since been on the lookout for more shirts of that nature. Recently, I stumbled upon fellow Canadian Erin Kleinberg's line. It appears she's got the whole slouchy, sexy top thing down with the added bonus of some embellishments that separate her products from those at forever21. The company is still pretty small, but its been picked up by stores like Barneys, Intermix and Holt Renfrew (Canada), and recognized by Elle and Nylon, amongst other popular mags. While I haven't purchased anything yet, I'll keeping an eye out for the brand and definitely consider the investment.

In honor of her 50th birthday, Barbie was the fashion world's it-girl this year. She had an entire fashion show based on her and a Malibu Dream House themed party, amongst other Barbie-themed soirees. Most notably, in my mind anyway, was the almost month-long exhibition at Collette that featured tons of Barbie themed apparel, accessories and beauty products from a wide-range of well-known brands like Jeremy Scott and Stila. And let's not forget about Karl Lagerfeld's little involvement in the whole shabang - Baptiste Giabiconi and Barbie dressed up and photographed by the man himself, how can you not be down?

Regardless, this all happened ages ago...Let's fast forward to now. Christian Louboutin has designed a limited edition "cat burglar" Barbie doll that comes with 4 pairs of loubs, their boxes and dust bags.

I've recently been inspired by one of Becky's looks on Full House. She was wearing an oversized red crocheted sweater (like sooooo totally in right now) and black leggings, topped off with a black cross choker. Yeup, choker. Very rarely do I post full editorials on this blog firstly out of fear of picture overload, but more often than not because it's uncommon that I LOVE every photo from an entire shoot. I had to post this whole editorial for the simple reason that I do love every photo in it and I think that you'll enjoy it enough to not want to x out of the page because there are too many photos. Let's tackle the flip-flops first...Initial thoughts: skinny straps? Not into them. Then my eyes traveled and saw the back strap. What? Why? Serious question. To fance up flip flops? Maybe. To spice things up? probably. But I don't quite understand why they'd want to do either. Admittedly, I've never been a huge fan of flip-flops. Yeah, they're good for the beach and college dorm bathrooms, but in my opinion, they cheapen and shlumpify (oh yes, I did) most outfits. That's the exact reason why I think Havaianas should stop trying to be "new" and "cool". Bank on what your customers know and love you for - your classic floppers. Experiment with colors, materials, patterns, whatever, but don't mess with the OG recipe that made your company successful. Plus, I'm pretty sure the whole back-strap thing would take away the "flip-flopping" sound, defying the whole gimmick of flip-flops. But hey, I could be wrong... I mean Crocs thrived in the marketplace, and let's not get into my opinion of those...

Onto the Essie colors...Wowowowazee. They're so freaking bright and adorable. I want all of the colors pictured above on my fingers/toes at the same time. For me, there's something about summer and wanting to experiment with all the colors that I always gag at during the winter in the nail salon. Yellow? Yes, please. Mint green? YESYESYES (this is what I'm planning on getting when I get a mani next!). All of Essie x Havaianas colors? Right on, let's do it.

Mixing two different washes of denim stirs up images of light denim mom-bum jeans topped with dark denim jackets, poofy 80s hair (bangs included, obvi) and some sketchy shade of pink lipstick - a definite no-no in my mind (and I hope yours too). Actually, now that I think about it, wearing more than one denim piece has always been kind of "off" in my mind (think: denim suit). Came across this top on I DONT LIKE MONDAYS (great e-shop, if you haven't checked it out yet, I suggest you should!) and it got me thinking about these shock value tees. I could totally see it being rocked on some too-cool chick with a goddamn black fedora and some shiny AA leggings, doc martens included. I'd half roll my eyes, half be like damn shorty. On the one hand I think this top is kind of badass (seriously, what naked boobie top isn't?), but on the other hand I don't think I'd ever be able to wear it. I think I'd feel exposed, maybe? I'd always be worried that little kiddles would pass by me on the street and ask their moms/dads what the hell was going on/try to imitate/cry/pick their nose/whatever and I'd feel bad for corrupting their innocent brains. Point of this whole shpeil is: for $98, no thanks. I'd rather buy a $5 oversized white tee and sharpie on some boobs/vag - it'd probably be more ironic/wild/superstarcokebaby anyway.

OR I'd save that $98 and add $166 more and buy this adorable romper and frolick in the fields of...Montreal (????)

Let's talk about Balmain

Let's just fucking do it. I get it, it's sort of (okay, really) ridiculous that Balmain can get away with charging over 2k for a pair of acid wash jeans, which, might I add, are sold out on net-a-porter. Here's the truth, though: if I had that kind of money, I'd probably buy them too. Well, maybe not the jeans, but definitely the crystal-embellished canvas jacket which costs $11,410. Seriously, who can bring back the dreaded shoulder-pads AND make them look so good? Decarnin can. There's just something about Balmain's pieces that are so tough, yet overly-embellished and chic all at the same time. And yeah, he may have hardly altered a few of his S/S 09 designs and put them in his F/W 09 show, but it's okay, because apparently he can. Fashion editors, models, socialites, and loaded party-girls alike are eating his shit up -- some are pulling it off (read: Emmanuelle Alt) and some are not (read: Beyonce). I don't know how long the hype will last because Balmain does portray a very specific look/girl/lifestyle, but for now I'm digging on it hard.S/S 09

So here's the thing: I love shoes. and by love, I mean LOVE. I can look at shoe porn for hours on end, never even thinking to stop of stopping until I realize it's 4am and I have to wake up at 8:30am, to which I say "okay, 5 more minutes, 5 more minutes!!!!". So HERE is my fucking issue: apparently brands are making less and less small sizes of shoes. When I initially heard this, I scoffed, thought "SUCKS FOR YOU CHICKAS WITH THEM SIZE 4.5 FEET!", and put it way back in the deepest depths of my brain. It was all well and good UNTIL I was lurking childhood flames and fell in love with her Pierre Hardy for Gap 3 strap platform sandals. I immediately went to Gap.com to find that...they were not made in size 36! THAT'S RIGHT, not EVEN made in 36! Tell me world, what the fuck is this shit? Some sort of sick joke? Cause I'm not laughing.

Hedi Slimane is fabulous at snapping portraits. I was browsing his blog the other day and found a few new ones that I love:

These pictures embody some serious youth rocker vibes, but underneath it all I feel some sort of innocence present. Could be that they're done in black & white...I don't really know, but I feel it!

In other (pretty old) Slimane news, his LiLo shoot was pretty great too. I've never been a big fan of hers, but she's undoubtedly a stunner and Slimane does a nice job at capturing that. (Side note: she does sort of look emaciated in these...and I, surprisingly enough, don't dig it too much)

So it's no secret that studs are being seen on everything from shoes to hats, to the point where it's half obnoxious, half awesome. But while lurking jak&jil I found this great photo of some studded denim knee patches.I'm not gonna lie, I'm obsessed and need to do this to a pair of my jeans asap. I have plans brewing in my head for some sort of DIY project. Amazing.

I feel like watches have become relatively obsolete in the whole accessories spectrum due to the whole cellphone thang. When I need the time, I look at my phone; that's just how it goes. So when I realized that I'd need one for my summer job as a sleepaway counselor (jew camp revival whaddup), I was all shitshitshit where do I get a nice, practical watch that isn't a blingy rolex (I'd rock one of those if I had the cashflow in SECONDS)? And then I stumbled upon this classic Timex watch on the Opening Ceremony site. It kind of gives off a cool, retro vibe with its extremely plain interface and bubblegum pink colour, and at 50$, it's definitely an option. WANT.

I'm heading off to New York City with two of my favorite people and I could not be more excited. Smells Like Teen Spirit

I have a new addiction to being a hermit and watching one tree hill. I stayed in last night and the night before to watch, and I honestly can't say I regret it (though it has led to some pretty overly-dramatic dreams that confused the fuck outta me). I don't what it is with these high school shows that get me so hooked. I recognize that they're mindless, with plot-lines that hardly paint a realistic portrait of those dear high school years, but then I realize, maybe that's why I like them so much. When I was growing up, all I ever wanted was to be a teenager. My best friends and I would play "The Teenager Game", and dress up in teenager clothes and platforms that were way too big on us. We'd think up useless problems about boys, money, parents and school that we thought epitomized high school, and we'd act it out. I honestly think we could've given these tv-show writers a real run for their money. The problem is, once I became a teenager, I realized that the stories and fantasies that fueled my desire to be a teenager were all fake. There were no cheerleaders, no football team (not one that anyone cared about anyway), no baby mama drama. And now, looking back on my high school years that passed, thinking about what I'll be telling my kids about when I describe my high school experience to them, I can't really think of much except for expectations (grades, social, whatever) and experimentation (lifestyles, friends, rebellion). Now that I'm old and wise, a college student and all, I honestly don't feel as though high school is all that it's cracked out to be...I actually didn't care much for it while I was there.
So, back to my original point, I think I'm so addicted to these shows because they are exactly what I thought high school was supposed to be all about, and maybe a little part of me can't let go of everything I had hoped and dreamed of for my high school years. Admittedly, that's a bit sad, but I think it's true.
